How to Deal With Being Ghosted (and Stop Blaming Yourself)
By the Pookeez team · · 6 min read
One day you’re texting every evening and planning a second date. The next, nothing. No reply, no explanation, just silence. Being ghosted is one of the most common, and most confusing, parts of modern dating. Here’s why it happens, why it stings so much, and how to move on without turning it into a story about what’s wrong with you.
What is ghosting?
Ghosting is when someone you’ve been talking to or dating cuts off all contact without explanation. It can happen after a few messages, after a first date, or even months in. Its cousins include breadcrumbing (occasional texts that keep you hooked) and orbiting (they stop replying but still watch your stories). See more dating terms explained.
Why people ghost
Ghosting almost always says more about the ghoster than about you. Common reasons:
- Avoiding an awkward conversation. Saying “I don’t feel a spark” feels uncomfortable, so they say nothing.
- Too many options. On apps, some people juggle several chats and let the quieter ones drop.
- Life got busy or heavy. Work stress, family pressure or mental health can make someone withdraw.
- They met someone else and didn’t know how to say it.
- They weren’t ready to date in the first place, often after a recent breakup.
- The profile wasn’t real. Fake or half-hearted profiles vanish all the time. It’s one reason verified profiles matter.
Why ghosting hurts so much
Rejection with an explanation is painful but clear. Ghosting leaves a gap, and your brain fills it with worst-case guesses: Did I say something wrong? Was it my photos? Am I too much? That lack of closure is why a few weeks of chatting can hurt more than you expect. Your feelings are valid, even if you only went on one date.
Should you text them?
If it would genuinely help you, send one short, calm message, then let it go. For example:
- “Hey, haven’t heard from you in a while. Hope you’re okay. If you’re not feeling it, no worries at all, I’d just appreciate knowing.”
- “Looks like we’re on different pages. I enjoyed meeting you, take care!”
Avoid sending a string of messages, guilt-tripping, or checking their online status. Not getting a reply is still an answer. For more on when and how much to message, read our guide to texting etiquette in dating.
How to move on after being ghosted
1. Don’t make it about your worth
Someone who barely knew you made a choice about their own comfort. It isn’t a verdict on whether you’re lovable.
2. Stop replaying the chat
Rereading old messages for clues keeps the wound open. If it helps, archive or mute the conversation. Our tips on how to stop overthinking can help here.
3. Talk to a friend
Saying it out loud to someone who knows you usually shrinks the story back to its real size.
4. Take a short break if you need one
If you’re feeling drained, pause the apps for a week or two. Coming back rested beats swiping while hurt. Here’s more on dealing with dating app burnout.
5. Look for consistency next time
People who are genuinely interested make plans, follow through and communicate. Treat those as green flags, and don’t over-invest before you’ve met.
How not to ghost others
If you’re not feeling it, a short, kind message is enough. It takes a minute and saves the other person days of wondering:
- “I really enjoyed meeting you, but I didn’t feel a romantic connection. Wishing you the best!”
- “I’ve realised I’m not in the right headspace to date right now. Sorry, and take care.”
The exception: if someone is rude, pushy or makes you feel unsafe, you don’t owe them anything. Block and report.
Ghosting FAQs
How long before it counts as ghosting?
There’s no fixed rule, but if someone you were talking to regularly goes silent for a week or more, ignores a direct message and hasn’t explained, it’s fair to assume you’ve been ghosted.
Should I text someone who ghosted me?
You can send one short, calm message if it helps you close the chapter. Don’t send more than one, and don’t expect a reply.
Is ghosting ever okay?
Going silent is reasonable if someone is rude, pushy or makes you feel unsafe. In other cases, a short, kind message is better than disappearing.
