12 Safe Online Dating Tips for India (How to Spot Fake Profiles and Scams)
By the Pookeez team · · 7 min read
Online dating can be one of the best ways to meet someone new, but fake profiles, catfishing and romance scams are real. These 12 online dating safety tips will help you spot red flags early, protect your privacy and meet up safely, wherever in India you’re swiping.
Protect your profile and personal info
1. Keep personal details off your profile
Your full name, home address, office address, phone number and daily routine don’t belong in your bio. Share them only once you’ve built real trust, and only if you want to.
2. Use photos that aren’t on your other socials
A quick reverse image search can link a dating photo to your Instagram or LinkedIn. Using pictures you haven’t posted elsewhere makes it harder for strangers to find you before you’re ready.
3. Keep chatting on the app at first
Scammers often push to move to WhatsApp or Telegram quickly, where there’s no reporting and no moderation. Stay on the app until you’re comfortable. If someone won’t, that tells you something.

4. Video call before you meet
A short video call is the simplest catfish check there is. Endless excuses about a broken camera or bad network are a red flag.
5. Reverse image search their photos
If their pictures turn up under a different name, on a model’s page or on stock photo sites, it’s a fake profile. Report it and move on.
6. Watch for the classic red flags
- Only one or two photos, or photos that look professionally shot.
- Intense compliments and talk of love within days (“love bombing”).
- A sad or dramatic story that keeps getting bigger.
- Claims to live abroad, work on a ship or oil rig, or be in the army overseas.
- Avoiding every plan to meet or video call.
Avoid romance and money scams
7. Never send money, gifts or OTPs
No matter how real the connection feels, never send money, gift cards, crypto or your bank details to someone you’ve met online, and never share an OTP. Common scams in India include a “gift” stuck at customs that needs a fee, a medical emergency, or a flight ticket they can’t afford.
8. Ignore investment and trading tips
A match who keeps talking about a trading app, crypto platform or “guaranteed returns” is almost certainly running a scam. Unmatch and report them.
9. Be careful with intimate photos and video calls
Sextortion is when someone records or collects intimate content and then threatens to share it unless you pay. Don’t share anything you wouldn’t want made public. If it happens to you, don’t pay. Stop replying, save the evidence and report it. It’s not your fault.
Meeting in person safely
10. Meet somewhere public and get there yourself
Pick a busy café, restaurant or park, and arrange your own transport there and back. Need ideas? Try our first date ideas in Bangalore.
11. Tell a friend your plans
Share who you’re meeting, where and when, and set a time to check in. Sharing your live location with a trusted friend for the evening is a good backup.
12. Trust your gut and leave whenever you want
Stay in control of your drink and belongings, and keep your phone charged. If something feels off, you can leave at any time. You don’t owe anyone the rest of the date.
If something goes wrong
- Report and block the person in the app straight away.
- Save evidence: screenshots of the profile, chats, payment details and phone numbers.
- Cyber fraud or sextortion: call the national cyber crime helpline on 1930 or report at cybercrime.gov.in. If you’ve lost money, report it as quickly as you can.
- Emergencies: call 112. The Women Helpline is 181.

Online dating safety FAQs
How can I tell if a dating profile is fake?
Look for very few or overly polished photos, a profile that pushes to move off the app, and someone who avoids video calls. A reverse image search of their photos is a quick check.
Is it safe to share my phone number with a match?
Wait until you’ve chatted for a while and video called. Your number can be linked to your name, UPI ID and social accounts, so share it only when you trust the person.
What should I do if I’m scammed on a dating app?
Stop all contact and payments, save the evidence, report the profile in the app, and report it to the cyber crime helpline on 1930 or at cybercrime.gov.in as soon as possible.
