How to Tell If a First Date Went Well (and What to Text After)
By the Pookeez team · · 6 min read
The date’s over, you’re on your way home, and your brain is replaying every moment. Did it go well? Should you text first? Here are the signs a first date went well, the signs it didn’t, and exactly what to text after.
Signs your first date went well
- Time flew. You looked up and it had been three hours, not one.
- The conversation flowed. Few awkward pauses, lots of follow-up questions and inside jokes already forming.
- They asked about you. And they remembered what you said.
- They suggested extending the date. “Want to grab dessert?” is a great sign.
- They talked about next time. Mentioning a place to go together or something to show you.
- Their body language was open. Facing you, eye contact, phone put away.
- They checked you got home safe. A small thing that says a lot.
- You felt like yourself. Relaxed, not performing.
Signs it might not have clicked
- They were on their phone a lot.
- Answers were short and they didn’t ask much back.
- They ended it quickly with a vague “this was nice”.
- No mention of meeting again.
None of these are certain. Some people are just nervous on first dates. If you’re not sure, the best way to find out is to send a message.
What to text after a first date
There’s no rule that says you have to wait three days. If you had a good time, it’s fine to text the same evening or the next day. Keep it short, warm and specific.
If you want to see them again
- “Had a really great time tonight. That dosa place was a good call. Up for round two next week?”
- “Home safe! Still laughing about the auto story. Let’s do this again soon.”
- “I really enjoyed tonight. Are you free next weekend? I owe you that board game rematch.”
If you’re not sure yet
- “Thanks for tonight, I had fun. Hope the rest of your week goes well!”
This leaves the door open without committing to a second date.
If you’re not interested
Don’t ghost. A short, kind message is enough:
- “Thanks for meeting up today. You’re great, but I didn’t feel a romantic spark. Wishing you the best!”
What if they don’t reply?
Give it a day or two. People get busy. If there’s still no reply, one gentle follow-up is fine. After that, let it go. It’s not a reflection of your worth, it just wasn’t the right match. (And now you know what ghosting feels like, so you’ll never do it to anyone else.)
Planning the second date
A second date is a chance to try something a little more involved, like a cooking class, a gig or a day trip. Check out our date ideas in Bangalore for inspiration, and keep meeting in public places until you know each other well.
After the first date FAQs
How soon should you text after a first date?
There’s no need to wait. Texting the same evening or the next day to say you had a good time is completely normal.
Who should text first after a first date?
Whoever wants to. If you enjoyed the date, send a message. Waiting for the other person often means nobody texts.
How do you know if a first date went well?
Good signs include time flying by, easy conversation, them asking about you, extending the date, and talking about meeting again.
