How to Set Boundaries in Dating (with Examples)
By the Pookeez team · · 6 min read
Boundaries aren’t walls. They’re a way of telling people how you want to be treated, and they make dating safer and more enjoyable for everyone. Here’s how to set boundaries in dating, with real examples you can use, from the first message to a relationship.
What are boundaries?
A boundary is a limit you set to protect your time, energy, feelings, body or privacy. Healthy boundaries aren’t about controlling the other person. They’re about being clear on what you’re comfortable with and what you’ll do if that’s not respected.
Types of boundaries in dating
Time boundaries
How much time you can spend together, how quickly you reply, and how much space you need.
Emotional boundaries
How much you share and when, and not taking responsibility for someone else’s feelings.
Physical boundaries
What kind of touch you’re comfortable with, and when. Consent is needed every time, and a match or a date is never consent.
Digital boundaries
Sharing passwords, checking phones, posting about each other, and what you send over text.
Privacy boundaries
When you share your number, address, workplace or social media. Read our safe online dating tips for more.
Boundary examples you can use
- “I’d like to keep chatting on the app until we’ve met.”
- “I prefer to meet somewhere public for the first few dates.”
- “I’m not comfortable sharing my address yet.”
- “I’m not always quick at replying during work, but I’ll get back to you in the evening.”
- “I’d like to take things slow physically.”
- “I don’t send photos like that.”
- “I need a night to myself this week. It’s not about you.”
- “Please don’t check my phone. If something’s worrying you, let’s talk about it.”
How to set boundaries
- Know what you need. Think about what makes you uncomfortable before it comes up.
- Be clear and calm. Use “I” statements: “I’m not comfortable with…” rather than “You always…”.
- Don’t over-explain. You don’t need a long justification for your limits.
- Follow through. If someone keeps crossing a boundary, act on it, even if that means leaving or ending things.
When someone doesn’t respect your boundaries
Someone who respects you might make a mistake, but they’ll apologise and adjust. Someone who argues, guilt-trips or keeps pushing is showing you a red flag. You’re allowed to walk away. If you ever feel unsafe, leave, report and block them on the app, and call 112 in an emergency.
Respecting other people’s boundaries
Boundaries go both ways. When someone tells you their limits, thank them for being honest, don’t take it personally, and stick to it. Respecting a “no” is one of the most attractive things you can do.
On Pookeez, our Community Guidelines make consent and respect non-negotiable, and you can report or block anyone from their profile or your chat.
Boundaries FAQs
What are healthy boundaries in dating?
Healthy boundaries are clear limits around your time, emotions, body, digital life and privacy that help you feel safe and respected in a relationship.
How do you set boundaries without pushing someone away?
Be clear and calm, use “I” statements, and keep it simple. The right person will appreciate knowing what you need.
What do you do if someone ignores your boundaries?
Restate the boundary clearly. If they keep ignoring it, that’s a red flag, and it’s okay to end things. If you feel unsafe, leave and report them.
