The 5 Love Languages Explained (and How to Find Yours)
By the Pookeez team · · 6 min read
“What’s your love language?” has become a classic first date question. The idea comes from Gary Chapman’s book The 5 Love Languages, which suggests people tend to give and receive love in different ways. Here’s what each love language means, how to spot yours, and how to use it in dating.
The 5 love languages
1. Words of affirmation
What it is: feeling loved through words: compliments, encouragement, “I’m proud of you”, and hearing “I love you”.
Show it: send a sweet text out of the blue, notice the effort they put in, and say what you appreciate about them.
Avoid: harsh criticism and sarcasm, which can hit extra hard.
2. Quality time
What it is: feeling loved through undivided attention and time spent together.
Show it: plan dates, put your phone away, and really listen. Need ideas? Try our date ideas at home.
Avoid: cancelling plans last minute or scrolling while they talk.
3. Acts of service
What it is: feeling loved when someone does helpful things for you.
Show it: make them breakfast, help with a chore they hate, or book the cab when they’re tired.
Avoid: promising to help and not following through.
4. Receiving gifts
What it is: feeling loved through thoughtful gifts. It’s about the thought, not the price.
Show it: bring their favourite snack, a book they mentioned, or a flower from your walk.
Avoid: forgetting birthdays and special days.
5. Physical touch
What it is: feeling loved through physical closeness, like holding hands, hugs and cuddling.
Show it: a hug when you meet, holding hands on a walk, sitting close on the couch, always with consent and at a pace you’re both comfortable with.
Avoid: pulling away or being cold during conflict.
How to find your love language
- What do you ask for most? “Can we spend more time together?” or “Can you help me with this?” is a clue.
- What hurts most? If criticism stings more than a forgotten gift, words may matter most to you.
- How do you show love? We often give love the way we want to receive it.
Most people have a mix, with one or two that matter most. It’s a helpful way to talk about needs, not a strict rule.
Using love languages in dating
- Ask early. It’s a fun question on a first or second date. See more questions to ask on a first date.
- Speak their language, not just yours. If they value quality time, a gift may not land the way you expect.
- Talk about it. Saying “I feel most loved when…” helps your partner without making them guess.
- Different languages are fine. Couples with different love languages can be very happy. It just takes a little effort to learn each other.
